Every single fruit tree in the orchard gets cared for by hand every single year. Your support helps us take care of all our young trees.

STAGES OF AN ORCHARD

STAGE 1: It takes about $12,000 to plant an acre of new (600) trees which works out to about $20/tree. That pays for pulling out the dead trees, for preparing the ground, for buying the nursery stock, for planting, for laying new irrigation lines, for planting cover crops which retain moisture, for controlling insects, for building soil nutrients, and for fertilizing.

STAGE 2: It takes about $6,000/year which works out to about $10/tree per year. This gets an acre of new trees through each of its second through fifth seasons. That pays for weeding around the trunks so the mice don’t get in and girdle the tender young trees, for pruning and training them into their orchard shapes, for irrigating them, and for spraying them with minerals and biological compounds to prevent pests and disease.

STAGE 3: It takes about $10,000/acre to harvest the trees! At a little less than $17/tree, that pays for seasonal pruning, for irrigating, for running wind machines to stave off frost in the spring, for blossom thinning and fruit thinning to give each tree only as many babies as it can support, for spraying them with minerals and biological compounds to prevent pests and disease, and for the crew’s labor to pick the fruit when it’s ripe.

ABOUT THE TREE VARIETIES

Our plan is to replant about 2 acres of peaches in 2021, and nurture the 10 acres of our other young trees.  As we are able to replant trees, your support will help us take care of those trees until they bear fruit.  This year we are also going to trial plant just a couple rows of a new fruit, the jujube tree, which is supposed to be more drought tolerant than most and currently has no pests to attack it in this area. (Hopefully you’ll be able to try these “Persian Dates” at our farmers markets sometime in the next few years!
